What’s next for SB 826?

There is a lot of debate, frustration, and uncertainty surrounding what’s going on with SB 826 to Repeal and Replace Common Core (math/ELA), science, social studies, and aligned assessments with the proven Massachusetts standards.

Here’s what we know…

SB 826 as INTRODUCED is a STRONG bill.   How do we know?  The passed the Senate Education Committee on with a 4-1 vote!   (Kudos to Senator Pavlov who said he supported the bill “without amendments.”)

Congressman Mike Bishop called for the passage of SB 826 “yesterday.” (Kudos to Rep. Bishop)

Michigan Campaign for Liberty and Michigan Prosperity Project endorsed SB 826 as introduced.  (Kudos to the grassroots!)

Those are all strong endorsements for a STRONG bill.

The Senate meets July 13th.  SB 826 (as introduced) is #50 on the agenda.

Here’s what we needs to happen next….

The FULL Senate must vote to pass SB 826 on July 13 session AS INTRODUCED.

Here’s what we need YOU to do…

Call Senate Majority Leader Meekof’s office at (517) 373-6920 or email at SenAMeekhof@senate.michigan.gov and politely but firmly ask him to bring SB 826 AS INTRODUCED and VOTED out of the Education Committee up for a vote at the July 13th session.

Call your State Senator and encourage them to vote YES on SB 826 AS INTRODUCED and VOTED out of the Education Committee at the July 13th session.

Here’s what happens next…

The bill moves to the House where the companion bill HB 5444 (Rep. Gary Glenn Sponsor) resides in the House Education Committee chaired by Rep. Amanda Price (517) 373-0838

And then…

The bill is voted out of the House education committee AS INTRODUCED early in the fall 2016. (Kudos to Rep. Price)

And then

The bill is voted out of the House in the Fall 2016 Session (Kudos Rep. Gary Glenn, Speaker Cotter, and affirming Representatives!)

And then…

The bill moves to the Governor’s desk and he signs it.

And then…

Common Core, science, social studies and aligned assessments are repealed and replaced in Michigan!

(Obviously, it isn’t going to be as easy as it seems in this post but we KNOW it will NOT happen if YOU do not get on the phone and call Senator Meekof and YOUR Senator.)
