Pledge to Return Control to Parents

Stop Common Core in Michigan created a pledge to circulate to lawmakers and candidates seeking office.   Please take this pledge to candidate forums, parades, and other events and ask the candidates seeking your vote where they stand.   Ask them to sign the pledge and send it back to us (address below).   If a candidate does NOT want to sign the pledge.  We want to know.  We will keep track of which candidates are truly FOR returning education back to the parents.    Thank you for your help!

The pledges can be viewed and printed here

The pledge appears as follows,

MICHIGAN STATE AND LOCAL CANDIDATE

PLEDGE TO RETURN CONTROL OF EDUCATION TO PARENTS

SUMMER 2016

Nationally, the US spends trillions of dollars per year on education.  The Federal Department of Education, created thirty-six years ago, controls less than 10% of the total Michigan education spending*, but exerts dramatic influence without any evidence of positive outcomes for kids.

The State of Michigan has spent billions in education, increasing steadily year over year despite declining public school enrollment.  Outcomes for children in Michigan are unacceptable, especially in terms of reading, writing, math and demonstrating an understanding of our US history and heritage.

Michigan has a long history of local control for education.  Additionally, the important role of parents has been codified in statute:

Michigan – THE REVISED SCHOOL CODE (EXCERPT) Act 451 of 1976 380.10
Rights of parents and legal guardians; duties of public schools.
[M.S.A. 15.4010 ] Sec. 10. It is the natural, fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to determine and direct the care, teaching, and education of their children. The public schools of this state serve the needs of the pupils by cooperating with the pupil’s parents and legal guardians to develop the pupil’s intellectual capabilities and vocational skills in a safe and positive environment. HistoryAdd. 1995, Act 289, Eff. July 1, 1996
