The results of Tuesday’s primary are in and very encouraging. Perhaps the biggest upset victory was in the primary for U.S. Congress in the 1oth and 1st District. Was the issue of common core and our pledge a key factor in the race? We think so!
In the 10th Congressional District, it was a five-way race between Phil Pavlov, Paul Mitchell, Tony Forlini, Alan Sanborn, and David VanAssche. All the candidates EXCEPT Phil Pavlov signed the Stop Common Core in Michigan pledge. Paul Mitchell won the race with 38% of the vote. Pavlov came in second with 28% of the vote. (Source: AP)
The race for the 1st Congressional District was also competitive. Candidate Jack Bergman prevailed over MI Senator Tom Casperson and Alan Johnson. Bergman signed the pledge the other two candidates did not.
Jeff Jones signed the pledge and ran for US Congress in the 12th District. His race was uncontested.
There were also many competitive races for Michigan House of Representatives. In the 13 primaries we were following, NINE of the candidates who signed the Stop Common Core in Michigan pledge WON their primary. Congratulations to the following candidates.
Jeff Noble 20th, Jim Runstead 44th, John Reilly 46th, Logan Fleckenstien 60th, Michelle Gregoire 62nd, Steve Johnson 72nd, Gary Howell 82nd, Shane Hernandez 83rd, Gary Glenn 98th.
The race for the 32nd District is also informative. In a three-way race, Pam Hornberger won against Michael Shmina and Justin Tranchita. Shmina and Tranchita both signed the pledge, Hornberger did NOT sign. Here’s the actual vote totals posted by MLive.
Hornberger 2,777 (40%)
Shmina, Michael 2,259 (33%)
Tranchita, Justin 1,885 (27%)
The TOTAL votes FOR candidates who signed the pledge was larger by a significant margin. Stop Common Core in Michigan congratulates Hornberger for her hard fought victory but we encourage her to reconsider and sign the pledge before the general election. (Printable copy available here)
The message is clear….Michigan voters do NOT want FedEd and voted FOR candidates who pledged to return education to Michigan.
Stop Common Core in Michigan congratulates all the winners in the August primary. We do NOT endorse candidates but we DO encourage those who won to sign the Stop Common Core in Michigan pledge. It could be the factor that gives you the win in November.
